          Juan Manuel Ugarte Elespuru's Biography

          Prominent Peruvian painter, sculptor, historian and writer. He spent five years in the studio of Alfredo Guido, where he learned the art of engraving and mural painting. He moved to Chile, where he presented his first personal exhibition of oil paintings, engravings and frescoes on board in 1938 and later in 1939. He returned to Lima in 1940. In 1944 he joined the staff of professors of the National School of Fine Arts of Lima (ENBA ), in the chairs drawing, art history, he was the initiator of teaching printmaking in 1948, mural painting and stage design. In 1956 he was appointed Director of the ENBA, a position he held until 1973 expelled by the dictatorship of the time.
          He died in Lima on 23 August 2004.
