          Juan Escutia's Biography

Mexican national hero, one of the combatants who died at the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847. Little is known about whether or not he belonged to the Military school. Tradition remembers him as one of the heroes who gave their lives to defend the homeland. He died on 13 September 1847 in Mexico City, aged 20. Presumably he was in charge of guarding the tower where the national flag was flying and before the imminent entrance of the invading army to the fortress, he took the Flag of Mexico and wrapped himself in it and jumped onto the hillside in order not to let it fall into the hands of the enemy.
