          Joshua Reynolds's Biography

British artist, one of history’s great portrait painters who achieved renown and financial success in his lifetime. He promoted the “Grand Style” in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect. A founder and the first President of the Royal Academy, he was knighted by King George III in 1769 and named “Painter of the King” in 1784.
In 1789 Reynolds lost the sight of his left eye, which forced him into retirement. Reynolds died on 23 February 1792 at his house in Leicester Fields in London between eight and nine in the evening. He never married and his sister, Frances, who lived with him as housekeeper, referred to him as “a gloomy tyrant.”
