          Joseph Mendes da Costa's Biography

          Dutch symbolist sculptor and art teacher.
          His parents Moses Mendes da Costa (2 October 1835 7 AM, Amsterdam, 11 June 1891) and Esther Teixeira de Mattos (25 June 1835 Amsterdam,- 1915) were Sephardic Jews, descendants of the Jewish philosopher Uriel Acosta or also written as Uriel da Costa(1583/84 – April 1640). They married 2 October 1861 in Amsterdam His father was a tomb mason, clerk and broker.
          On 11 June 1891 he married (H)Anna Jessurun de Mesquita (25 November 1863 – 1928), the sister of Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. They got no children.
          On 1 June 1914 he received a honorary doctorate in Groningen for his sculptures of animals.
          His last work was an expressionistic sculpture of Herman Heijermans in Amsterdam (1935).
          He died 20 July 1939 in Amsterdam.
