          Joseph Luns's Biography

          Dutch politician and diplomat who served as Secretary General of NATO from 1 October 1971 until 25 June 1984. He had previously served as Minister for Foreign Policy from 1952 to 1956, and as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1956 to 1971.
          Throughout his tenure at NATO, Luns, a conservative, was committed to ties with the U.S. and the U.K. and was cautiously sceptical of Soviet policy. He pushed European governments to increase military spending and endorsed plans to install ballistic missiles in Western Europe. Luns’ wit and agility in guiding NATO earned him praise from many quarters.
          Luns died on 17 July 2002 in Brussels aged 90.
