          Johnny Podres's Biography

          American baseball pitcher who played with the Brooklyn Dodgers/ Los Angeles Dodgers (1953–1966), Detroit Tigers (1966–1967) and San Diego Padres (1969).
          He started with the Dodgers in Brooklyn, moving with the team to Los Angeles. In 1965, he dazzled the Yankees and pitched the Brooklyn Dodgers to their only World Series Championship. Podres was famous for his pin-point control and his fastball. Traded to Detroit in 1966, he moved to San Diego in 1969. During this period he underwent treatment for alcoholism. Podres finished his career with a record of 148 victories.
          Podres went into alcohol rehab in San Diego, 1970, but did not stay with it; it was not until June 1983 that he began to celebrate sobriety. He later settled in Queensbury, New York and died at age 75 on 13 January 2008 in Glens Falls, New York, after being hospitalized for heart and kidney ailments and a leg infection.
