John Ruskin's Biography
British writer and art critic with the voice of a Puritan and idealist. A philosopher and social reformer, he influenced public opinion about Gothic architecture, social conditions and the art of his day. Born into the wealthy family of a wine merchant, he had extensive travels as a boy and was privately tutored. He received an Oxford degree in 1842 and won the Newdigate prize in 1839.
Ruskin was first published in 1842 with “Modern Painters,” which established him as one of the most influential critics of his day. Over the next 17 years, he added numerous more volumes of work to his list of accomplishments. He was the first Slade Professor of Art at Oxford in 1869 and remained until 1879.
Ruskin married Euphemia Gray in 1848, an unfortunate union which was annulled. From 1870, Ruskin, with a family history of mental disturbance, had periodic bouts with insanity, and he remained an invalid from 1889 until his death, mentally deranged, on 1/20/1900, Brantwood, England.
