          John Flamsteed's Biography

British astronomer; the first Astronomer Royal of England, appointed on 4 March 1674-1675 and also the Director of Greenwich Observatory. He made the accurate observations of the moon which helped Newton formulate the laws of gravitation. He catalogued over 3000 stars. His appointment was an honour, with the title Astronomer Royal chosen from among the most famous British scientists.
He was responsible for several of the earliest recorded sightings of the planet Uranus, which he mistook for a star and catalogued as ’34 Tauri’. The first of these was in December 1690, which remains the earliest known sighting of Uranus by an astronomer.
Flamsteed died on 31 December 1719, aged 73, in Greenwich, England. The crater Flamsteed on the Moon is named after him, and the asteroid (4987) Flamsteed is named in his honour.
