German artist, who put a career as a merchant and stockbroker behind him, and in 1927, aged 76 years, began intensive creative output as a visual artist. One of his watercolours from 1930 is inscribed with the text Mein ganzes Leben war ein Fehler / da wurd ich Maler und Erzähler (“My whole life was a mistake / then I became a painter and narrator”). Elsas’ extensive oeuvre was reviewed by critics around 1930; after that it was forgotten for about 70 years. He died in Frankfurt am Main on 5 June 1935, aged 83.
