          John Davis's Biography

English mathematician, conspirator and a soldier in the English Army who fought in the Spanish Wars of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign under Robert Devereux, the 2nd Earl of Essex.
He joined the Earl’s failed rebellion against the crown. Holding office as Surveyor of Ordnance at the Tower of London, Davis guarded the hall of the Queen’s Palace at Whitehall once her attendants had been overpowered by the Earl. On 5 March 1601, Davis was convicted and sentenced to death for his part in the rebellion, and he was later pardoned upon his abandonment of both his friends and his Catholic faith.
He died on 14 May 1625, aged 65, at Pangbourne, Berkshire.
