          John Charles Clifford's Biography

          American dancer and choreographer with the New York City Ballet, one of the youngest choreographers to make an impact on American dance. He began dancing as a youngster in 1959, showing off his sprightly effervescence with the New York Ballet. He also played a few dance roles on TV.
          After graduating from Hollywood High School, he studied dance including a stint with the Bolshoi company in 1966. He worked with the NYC Ballet in 1966, adding roles and moving into production. In the following five years Clifford made a singular impact on American dance with his mercurial allegro pacing, extraordinary turns and flamboyant style. A disciple of Balanchine and Robbins, he nonetheless is his own man with his own vision. Of medium height, handsome and restless, he can’t sit still for an interview. His style of dress leans to the unconventional; he likes opera.
