          John (1857) Davidson's Biography

Scottish poet, mainly noted for his lyrical poems, ballads, plays and a series of testaments. Born to the son of a minister of the Evangelical Union, the family’s poverty compelled him top work in a chemical laboratory. After a year at Edinburgh University, 1876-1877, he taught at various schools and settled in London to devote himself full time to writing, earning his livelihood by hackwork. Davidson’s work, “Fleet Street Ecologues,” in 1893 brought him some recognition, but with continuing poverty, ill health and lack of recognition, he committed suicide by drowning near Penzance 3/23/1909.
Davidson married Margaret McArthur in 1885.
