          Johann Conrad Seekatz's Biography

          German painter. He was mainly painting genre and military pictures, dipicting local rural life and landscapes with biblical scenes similar to the Dutch painter Adriaen Brouwer. Johann Conrad Seekatz learnt the art of painting mainly from his elder brother Johann Ludwig Seekatz (1711–1783). Both painted together from 1747 the decoration of the organ gallery in the Bergkirche of Osthofen. Johann Conrad became subsequently one of the important South German painters of his time. From 1753, Johann Conrad Seekatz was court painter of the princly court at Hessen-Darmstadt. He was a close friend of the family Goethe and some of his paintings are today in exhibition at the Goethe Haus in Frankfurt.
          He died 25 August 1768.
