Joe McQueen's Biography
American jazz saxophonist, the subject of the documentary film King of O-Town (2010). In 2002, the governor of Utah established 18 April as “Joe McQueen Day.” In 2019, the Utah legislature honoured his 100th birthday.
McQueen performed in Ogden, Utah with jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Paul Gonsalves, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, and others. McQueen toured as a musician in the Rocky Mountain West. He played in 1962 in Idaho Falls, Idaho with Hoagy Carmichael.
McQueen was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1969 after years of smoking. He underwent surgery and quit playing for several years. McQueen died on the morning of 7 December 2019 at the age of 100.
