          Joaquin Vargas Gené's Biography

          Costa Rican journalist who also served as a teacher, lawyer, farmer and public servant. He began his law studies at the University of Costa Rica, but suspended in 1946 to found the newspaper La Nacion. Shortly after he went to Spain, where he graduated as a journalist at the Complutense University of Madrid. He held positions of great responsibility as the minister of Interior during the administration of Mario Echandi Jiménez (1958-1962). He returned to journalism, directing the Journal of Costa Rica (1962-1964) and the radio program Word of Costa Rica.
          He participated in the conduct of the Association of Journalists of Costa Rica, who spearheaded the creation of the College of Journalists. In 1966 the then President Jose Joaquin Trejos Fernandez, calls the cabinet as Deputy Minister of Economy, Industry and Trade. Culminates legal studies at the University of Costa Rica at 48 years old in 1970. He combines his work as a lawyer and notary with the direction of the newspaper the Republic (1978-1985). His outstanding legal practice causes in 1987 was appointed deputy of the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court judge. In 2006 accepts the call of the Bar Association, the Association of Journalists, the School of Political Science and the Faculty of Law of the University of Costa Rica, to join the foundation of the Observatory for Freedom of Expression.
          He died in San Jose on 17 September 2006
