          Jim Cooke's Biography

Scottish-born English champion leaper, 2-4-6-horse rider, “Pickwick Act” and all around circus performer. The son of England’s then most famous circus proprietor, Thomas E. Cooke, he claimed to have at least 200 years of ancestry in showbusiness beginning with Cooke’s Royal Circus.
In the 1860s, he moved from Paris, France to the USA with his wife Carlotta DeBerg (also known as Charlotte de Berg, born Matilda Burke in Athlone, Ireland). They joined Howes circus. For several decades the pair were the most famous bareback riders of the circus ring. Cooke impersonated several Charles Dickens characters as part of his act.
He died in Jersey City, New Jersey, on 20 April 1907.
