          Jesse Unruh's Biography

American politician who was one of California’s most influential public officials in the 20th century. He was first elected to the state legislature in 1954 and quickly worked his way up through the ranks, eventually being elected speaker of the Assembly on 9/30/1961. He served as the state’s treasurer, as well.
Unruh’s story is truly one of rags-to riches. He grew up in poverty and, in 1940, hitchhiked to California on five dollars. When he finally made it to California, he got a job in an aircraft factory and served in the Naval Air Corps during WW II. His service in the military enabled him to go to school through the G.I. bill and become a success. He fit the definition of “self-made man” perfectly.
He married twice and had a total of five children.
In addition, on 4/20/1987, he was admitted to UCLA Medical Center with phlebitis, at which time he also received treatment for prostate cancer.
Unruh died on 8/04/1987, Marina Del Rey, CA.
