          Jerry (1934) Lewis's Biography

American politician who was a U.S. Representative, last serving California’s 41st congressional district. He was first elected to Congress in 1978, and previously represented the 40th, 35th, and 37th districts. A Republican, he was chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, serving in that role during the 109th Congress. In January 2012 he announced that he was not running for re-election and would end his congressional career in January 2013.
He was formerly an insurance executive from 1959 before entering politics as field rep to U.S. Rep Jerry Pettis in 1968.
Lewis, handsome and prematurely white-haired, swam and jogged to stay in shape. While in Washington DC on 17 May 1994, he left a restaurant in time to see his car being driven away. Reacting automatically, he ran after the car and caught up to it a few blocks away at a stop light. With the police at his tail, he apprehended the thief and pulled him out of the car.
In 1995, Lewis was named head of the House Appropriations subcommittee that oversaw $90 billion in spending for Veteran’s housing and for NASA’s Space program. He was also investigating ways to reform spending of HUD and other agencies.
Jerry Lewis was married with four children. He died on 15 July 2021 at age 86 in Redlands, California.
