          Jean Stafford's Biography

          American writer and Pulitzer Prize winning short-story writer in 1970, she also wrote novels, the first of which was published in 1944, entitled “Boston Adventures.”. She is most remembered for her short stories which were published in literary venues like “The New Yorker.”
          She was married three times, first to poet Robert Lowell on April 2, 1940. Two years before, she suffered severe facial injuries in an auto accident in which Lowell was driving. She wrote about the trauma in her successful 1947 short story, “The Interior Castle.” She divorced Lowell in June 1948 and married photographer Oliver Jensen on January 28, 1950. That unhappy marriage lasted three years ending in divorce in February 1953. Her third marriage was to journalist and writer A.J. Liebling on April 3, 1959. When he died on December 28, 1963, she stopped writing fiction.
          Stafford battled depression and alcoholism. In 1976 she suffered a stroke. Her heart failed on March 26, 1979.
