          Jean-Philippe Rameau's Biography

          French composer of the late Baroque period, best known today for his harpsichord music, operas, and works in other theatrical genres but in his lifetime also famous as a music theorist.
          He replaced Jean-Baptiste Lully as the dominant composer of French opera and is also considered the leading French composer for the harpsichord of his time, alongside François Couperin.
          He died on 12 September 1764 after suffering from a fever, thirteen days before his 81st birthday.
