          Jean-Jacques Schloesing's Biography

          French agricultural chemist who performed significant work concerning physical and chemical conditions in the field. In collaboration with Achille Müntz, he demonstrated nitrification in soil.
          Schloesing was the director (until 1899) of l’École d’application at the State Tobacco Factory, and since 1887 Professor of Chemistry at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers.
          Schloesing wrote Le tabac, étude théorique et pratique (1868) and a large number of articles in Comptes rendu, de l’académie des sciences and Annales de chimie et de physique. He was elected as a member of the Institut de France in 1882.
          He died on 8 February 1919 in Paris.
