          Jean Baptiste Lamy's Biography

          French-American ecclesiastic. As Archbishop in the Southwest United States 1875-1885, he established the first school to teach English in Santa Fe, New Mexico, extending the Roman Catholic faith to Indians and whites of the Southwest. Lamy was used as the model for Willa Cather’s novel “Death Comes for the Archbishop.”
          He died 2/13/1888 Santa Fe, NM.
