James Van Allen's Biography
American space scientist at the University of Iowa who was instrumental in establishing the field of magnetospheric research in space.
The Van Allen radiation belts were named for him, following his discovery using Geiger–Müller tube instruments on the 1958 satellites (Explorer 1, Explorer 3, and Pioneer 3 during the International Geophysical Year. Van Allen led the scientific community in putting scientific research instruments on space satellites.
He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1987 and the Crafoord Prize in 1989. James Van Allen died at age 91 on 9 August 2006 at University Hospitals in Iowa City from heart failure.
“Van Allen was one of the greatest and most accomplished space scientists of our time, and with very few scientists there was a wide range of expertise like his in so many scientific fields,” said NASA chief Michael Griffin after his death.
