          James Leo Herlihy's Biography

          American novelist and playwright, the author of the 1965 novel, “Midnight Cowboy,” which formed the basis for the popular gritty movie of the same name. His 1960 novel “All Fall Down,” and his 1958 play “Blue Denim,” were also adapted for cinema. His other publications include “The Season of the Witch” (1971) and several short stories.
          He was gay and a close friend of playwright Tennessee Williams (1911-1983), who served as his mentor. Both spent a significant amount of time in Key West, Florida.
          He committed suicide with an overdose of sleeping pills on 20 October 1993 in Los Angeles, California. He was 66.
