          Jackie Pung's Biography

          American pro athlete, a golfer who was Hawaii’s first woman U.S. Amateur Golf Champion. In 1957 she won the Women’s Open with her last stroke. However, at hole 4, her score was incorrectly recorded. She signed the scorecard. Under the rules she was responsible for catching the error. Even though she had won the competition and her total score was correct, she was disqualified soon after she was declared the winner.
          Born into a golfing family, her dad was President of the Hawaiian Golf Club and he introduced her to the game when she was very young.In 1938, when she was not even 17, she won Hawaii’s Women’s Amateur Championship for first time. She won that and three others. In 1952 she won her first US Women’s Amateur Championship. She turned professional that year and won several tournaments until her retirement in 1964. In 1965 she began teaching golf in Hawaii and taught well into her 80s. Her husband Barry died in 1978. In 1992 she was diagnosed with diabetes.
          Jackie Pung died on 15 March 2017 in Hawaii.
