Jack Glass's Biography
Scottish Protestant preacher, evangelicalist and political activist. Pastor Glass is most readily associated with his strong views on unionism in Northern Ireland, his anti-Catholic speeches and his association with the Rev. Ian Paisley in Northern Ireland. According to his obituary in The Times (London), Glass was seen as Scotland’s answer to Ian Paisley, although Paisley is quoted as saying that Glass “was a bit of an extremist”. Although epitomised as a religious bigot, he was often seen as a figure of fun: an example was a song from folksinger Dick Gaughan –
“Jack Glass fought the devil, he fought him all his days/Everywhere that Jack Glass looked, he saw the devil’s face/From the early hours of morning to the setting of the sun/Jack Glass fought the devil – that was all he’d ever done”
In January 2003, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He publicly proclaimed that this was a personal attack by the devil himself. His last public statement was to say that through the power of prayer he had “beaten the cancer the devil had given him.” He died on 24th February 2004
