          J. F. Oberlin's Biography

          Alsatian Protestant pastor and philanthropist, who has been called the “true precursor of social Christianity in France.” Oberlin’s orphan asylums were the beginning of the many “Oberlinvereine” for the protection of children, such as in Leonberg, Potsdam and Worms.
          His brother Jérémie Jacques Oberlin was a noted archaeologist and philologist.
          J. F. Oberlin died at Waldersbach on 1 June 1826, aged 85.
