          Isidore Paquin's Biography

French leading fashion designer, who was often the target of antisemitic hatred, particularly by the Anti-Dreyfusards.
Isidore-René Jacob was the son of Julie Emerique and Isaac-David Jacob, known as “Paquin”, a trader who died before the birth of his son. Isidore started out as a bank clerk before running a branch of the House of Bernhard-Carpentier in Levallois.
Under the pseudonym “Paquin”, already made famous by his parents, Isidore Jacob became known as a couturier in the early 1890s. Initially associated with the house “Paquin, Lalanne et Cie”, where he met his wife, it was with the latter that he bought the shares of Mrs. Lalanne in 1889.
The House of Paquin, located at No. 3 rue de la Paix, became one of the most famous in the capital. In 1896, its success enabled it to be transformed into a public limited company with a capital of 12 million francs, under the direction of Mr Paquin. Its head office was located in London, in Dover Street. Around 1900, the House employed no less than 850 workers.
By presidential decree of 27 June 1897 and by a judgment dated 2 August 1898, Isidore Jacob obtained the authorization to add “Paquin” to his surname.
Seriously ill for two years, Paquin died on 20 December 1907 in his hotel at No. 4 l’avenue d’Iéna in Paris. After his death, his wife Jeanne-Marie-Charlotte, née Beckers, took over the management of the House of Paquin, whose fame continued for several decades.
