          Imanuel Lauster's Biography

German technician and businessman who was CEO of MAN (Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg), a mechanical engineering company.
The son of a shoemaker, he began his training as a technician in the machine factory of Gotthilf Kuhn, where he worked as a designer of internal combustion engines from 1888 to 1892.
In January 1896, he joined Rudolf Diesel in the Augsburg machine factory (from 1908 known as MAN), becoming an authorized signatory and chief engineer in 1902, a board member in 1913, and chairman of MAN in 1932.
Lauster designed the first usable diesel engine, developing the first two-cylinder prototype in 1897, then creating the market-ready crosshead engine at MAN and then the engine without a crosshead (1898–1900), which in many countries was a model for the construction of diesel engines. He also played a major role in the development of submarine diesel engines.
From October to December 1926, he visited various American companies with engineer Paul Rieppel and another manager. As he reported, the German designs were usually too complicated for the Americans.
Imanuel Lauster died on 15 March 1948 in Leitershofen at age 75.
