          Ilse Langner's Biography

German writer and journalist, a published poet at age 14. Her greatest success came with the drama Die Heilige aus USA (“The Saint from the United States”), a biographical account of the founder of the Christian Science movement, Mary Baker-Eddy. The premiere by Max Reinhardt in 1931 at the Theater am Kurfürstendamm brought her much attention. In 1933 she undertook a world tour, which led her to the countries of Southeast Asia. She recorded her experiences in extensive travel prose, published after the Second World War. Her pacifist pieces were not allowed to be performed in the time of National Socialism (Nazism). Her Beijing novel Die purpune Stadt appeared in 1937 and was banned soon after its publication, however, it was printed again in 1944. In 1949 she wrote seven dramas within three months. In 1952 Ilse Langner became a member of the German Academy of Language and Literature. In 1963 she moved to Darmstadt. She undertook further trips, including to Japan, Thailand and Indonesia, and in 1966-1967 a lecture tour around the world on behalf of the Goethe-Institut. In 1968 she represented the German writers in Mexico at the Cultural Olympiad. In 1975 she travelled to Africa. She died on 16 January 1987 in Darmstadt, aged 87.
