          Ignacio Zuloaga's Biography

Spanish painter in the realist tradition of Velazquez and Murillo.
At age 18 he moves to Paris near Montmarte to train and work as a painter. Within 6 months his first painting is exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1890. He continues his studies and work for the next five years and has friendships with post-impressionists Ramon Casas, Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec. Upon failing to get recognition in London he returns to Spain, settling in Seville. He paints portraits of bullfighters and flamenco dancers, village dwarfs and beggars and village scenes.
During the Spanish Civil War he is attached to the Falangists led by Franco. While Picasso is painting Guernica, memorializing the destruction of the town of Guernica from the air by Nazi bombers, Zuloaga celebrates in painting the victory of Franco at the Siege of Alcazar in 1936. Later when Hitler conquers France he is aghast.
