          Humberto Espíndola's Biography

          Brazilian visual artist known as the creator and promoter of a bovine cultural theme. He also works in the university theatrical and literary milieu. He holds a Bachelor of Journalism from the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the Catholic University of Paraná, Curitiba (1965).
          Espíndola exhibited Bovinocultura in 1967 at the IV Salão de Arte Moderna do Distrito Federal in Brasília. In the same year, he co-founded the Mato-Grosso Art Association, in Campo Grande, where he worked until 1972. In 1973, he participated in the creation of the Museum of Popular Art and Culture (which he directed until 1982) and collaborated with the Rondon Museum, both at the Federal University of Mato Grosso in Cuiabá. In 1974 he created the external mural (painting, granite and marble), at the Palácio Paiaguás, the seat of the state government of Mato Grosso, and in 1983 he co-founded the Centro de Cultura Referencial de Mato Grosso do Sul. In 1979, he collaborated on the book Artes Plásticas no Centro-Oeste with Aline Figueiredo, which in 1980 won the Gonzaga Duque Prize from the Brazilian Association of Art Critics. In 1986 he was appointed the first secretary of culture in Mato Grosso do Sul, remaining in the position until 1990. In 1996 he created the 8m-high monument Cabeça de Boi (iron and steel) at the Praça Cuiabá in Campo Grande.
          Humberto Espíndola has held exhibitions in Brazil and other countries. He has won several awards, including the best of the year award from the Paulista Association of Art Critics. His works are held in museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Campo Grande, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the University of São Paulo, the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo and the Pinacoteca of the State of São Paulo.
