          Hugo Hoffmann's Biography

German entrepreneur known for his confectionery companies which he expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
He trained as a confectioner in Paris and, after returning to Germany in 1868, set up a “pastry chef’s kitchen” in Berlin’s Mohrenstrasse. First he made fondants and fruit pies, and since 1871 also chocolate and pralines. His efforts to take over a sales business were successful in 1878 with the acquisition of the Berlin “Confiseur-Waaren-Handlung Felix & Sarotti”. From 1883 onwards, he and his business partner Paul Tiede expanded production in the southwest of Berlin. They made marzipan from 1889.
Hoffmann employed around 1,000 people at the turn of the century. In 1903 he combined the companies “Felix & Sarotti” and “Hoffmann & Tiede” into “Sarotti Chocoladen- und Cacao-Industrie AG.”
Hugo Hoffmann died on 24 December 1911 in Berlin at age 67.
