          Hugh Ramsay's Biography

Australian artist whose major paintings include “The Sisters” and “The Lady with a Fan.”
Ramsay went to Europe in September 1900 and entered Académie Colarossi in Paris where he was soon recognised as a student of great potential. He was introduced to Nellie Melba, who gave him a commission for a portrait. Unfortunately Ramsay became ill in Paris, and it became necessary for him to return to the warmer climate of Australia and the opportunity to paint Melba was missed.
He died in Clydebank near the Gippsland Lakes on 5 March 1906 aged 28.
