          Huey P. Long's Biography

American lawyer and politician, former Governor of Louisiana and U.S. Senator, known for his absolute power during his governor years that earned him the title of “Dictator of Louisiana.” Lecherous and corrupt, he was nonetheless a beloved and popular man.
Long, nicknamed “Kingfish,” was governor from 1928-1931, defeated impeachment in 1929, and resigned to become a U.S. Senator from 1931-1935. On 9/08/1935, Long went to the Capitol in Baton Rouge to take part in some legislation in progress. At about 9:20 PM, wanting to talk to a reporter who was in the governor’s office, Long left the Capitol chamber, and was shot by an assassin while walking down a State Capitol corridor. Taken to the hospital, he was treated for a puncture of the colon, but a more serious kidney wound was overlooked. He died of an uncontrolled hemorrhage at 4:06 A.M. 9/10/1935 in Baton Rouge, La.
