          Hubert Beuve-Méry's Biography

          French journalist and newspaper editor who founded daily afternoon newspaper Le Monde in 1944 at the behest of Charles de Gaulle. The first edition of Le Monde was published in Paris on 19 December 1944. It is one of the most important and widely respected newspapers in the world.
          Before the Second World War, Beuve-Méry was associated with the Vichy regime until December 1942, when he joined the Resistance. In 1944, Following the liberation of France, Beuve-Méry built Le Monde from the ruins of Le Temps by using its offices, printing presses, masthead and those staff members who had not collaborated with the Germans.
          Beuve-Méry retired his editorship in 1969 but retained an office at the Le Monde building until his death on 6 August 1989 at age 87, at his home in Fontainebleau, near Paris.
