          Howard Schnellenberger's Biography

          American football coach with long service at both the professional and college levels. He held head coaching positions with the National Football League’s Baltimore Colts and in college for the University of Miami, University of Oklahoma, University of Louisville and Florida Atlantic University. He won a national championship with Miami in 1983. Schnellenberger also worked extensively as an assistant coach at the college and pro levels, including as part of the staff of the undefeated 1972 Miami Dolphins. He is also famous for recruiting Joe Namath to Alabama for Bear Bryant in 1961.
          Schnellenberger married Beverlee Donnelly in 1971. Their son, Stephen, was diagnosed as an infant with a rare form of endocrine cancer but lived a normal childhood and became an insurance broker in Florida; however, during a 2003 surgery, his heart stopped and he suffered brain damage that left him in a semi-comatose state. Subsequently, Stephen’s parents cared for him at their home in Boca Raton, Florida, until his death on 9 March 2008. Howard Schnellenberger died on 27 March 2021 at the age of 87 in Boca Raton, Florida.
