Hippolyte Michaud's Biography
French painter, museum curator and art teacher whose painting La Mansarde was purchased by the French government in 1866.
First a pupil of Louis Bonnet (1785-1860) at the Municipal School of Drawing in Beaune, then of Anatole Devosge (1770-1850) at the Free School of Drawing in Dijon in the early 1840s, Hippolyte Michaud was admitted in 1843 to the School of Fine Arts in Paris, then to the studio of Léon Cogniet (1794-1880), where he remained for a very short time.
Recipient of a scholarship from the Côte-d’Or department for his stay in Paris, he experienced poverty and health problems there. He survived by painting portraits and genre scenes. It was under a pseudonym that he exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1846, then exhibited under his name at various Salons.
Around 1864, Hippolyte Michaud was appointed curator of the Beaune Museum of Fine Arts, then in 1871 opened a drawing course applied to industrial arts and modelling for adults. The same year, the artist was appointed drawing teacher at the municipal school of Beaune, housed in the college of the city. He resigned in 1873, and died on 5 September 1886 at age 63 in Beaune.
