          Hermann Rieder's Biography

          German internist, radiologist and pioneer of X-ray contrast agent. In 1898, Rieder, who dealt with the therapeutic application of radiation, was appointed associate professor of physical healing methods at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, combined with the founding of the Rieder Institute. After the discovery of X-rays in 1904 he invented the radiological examination of the gastrointestinal tract using contrast media. As a contrast agent, he used bismuth salt-mixed chyme, which became part of the specialist literature as a Rieder meal. He died on 27 October 1932 in Munich.
