          Hermann Hirsch's Biography

German-Jewish painter and sculptor who concentrated largely on portrait and landscape painting in a creative period spanning 1880 to 1933.
From 1880 to 1914 he lived in Berlin, becoming a member of the Verein Berliner Künstler. He made his first trips to Italy in the 1890s and from 1901 to 1909 was a full member of the Deutscher Künstler-Verein in Rome.
In 1933, Hirsch fled to Göttingen as anti-Semitism grew. Although the city offered a degree of anonymity, since the mid-1920s it had been a stronghold of National Socialism (Nazism). As early as 28 March 1933, a good month before Hirsch arrived, violent riots against Jewish residents and their businesses took place in downtown Göttingen. Hermann Hirsch survived in this atmosphere for ten months before he put an end to his life on 1 March 1934 at the age of 72.
