          Herbert Lewandowski's Biography

German-Swiss Jewish writer and pioneer of sexology, who wrote under various pseudonyms including C. M. H. Léwan-Dovski, Herbert C. M. Lewandowski, Lee Van Dovski, Lee van Dowski, Kaspar Hauser, and Emmy Grant.
His 1926 study Das Sexualproblem in der modernen Literatur und Kunst (The Sexual Problem in Modern Literature and Art) attracted a great deal of attention and brought him into contact with early sexual reform advocates, notably Theodoor van de Velde, the author of Het volkomen huwelijk (The Perfect Marriage), with whom he made friends, and with Magnus Hirschfeld.
His diverse work includes journalistic, cultural-historical, and literary works, translations and editorial work. He is also the author of a science fiction novel Eine Reise ins Jahr 3000 (A journey into the year 3000).
In 1937, being Jewish, Lewandowski emigrated with his wife and children first to southern France, where he was interned at the beginning of the war by the French. After the German occupation he was interned again and escaped in 1942, initially without his family, to Switzerland. He spent 1942 to 1945 in Swiss internment camps, in Les Avants sur Montreux and Vicosoprano. He then remained in Switzerland, with Geneva as his adopted home, taking up Swiss citizenship in 1966.
He died on 4 March 1996 in Geneva, less than three weeks before his 100th birthday.
