          Henry Bowers's Biography

          Scottish explorer, a member of Robert Falcon Scott’s polar party on the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition (1910–1913), all of whom died during their return from the South Pole.
          Bowers was short, at five foot four inches. He had red hair and a distinctive beak-like nose that quickly earned him the nickname of “Birdie” among his fellow explorers. Optimistic, restless, full of plans and the joy of life, he was an ambitious navy man. Physically fit and disciplined, he nonetheless had an obsessive fear of spiders. He died on 29 March 1912, aged 29.
