Henriette Petit's Biography
Chilean painter, member and founder of Grupo Montparnasse, married to the painter Luis Vargas Rosas. Disciple of Juan Francisco González. She joined the School of Fine Arts in 1914, and two years later painted his first picture. Between 1920 and 1921 she took classes in Paris with the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, who portray a bronze bust titled Le chillienne. In 1923, already back in Chile, forming the Montparnasse Group, avant-garde movement of influences of post-impressionism and fauvism also integrated Luis Vargas Rosas with whom he married in 1927, José Perotti and July and Manuel Ortiz de Zárate brothers. In 1926 she settled in Paris, joining the art scene where she shared with, among others, the French Le Corbusier and Fernand Léger, Spaniards Juan Gris, Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso, Stanley William Hayter British and American Alexander Calder. In the French capital, in addition to devote herself to painting, she worked at the psychiatric hospital Henri-Rousselle. She returned to Chile with her husband in 1941, due to World War II. Petit’s artistic production declined significantly due to uprooting caused her to be away from France.
She died in Santiago on 9 December 1983.
