          Henri Marc Mouquin's Biography

A Swiss-American restaurateur, he emigrated to the United States at a young age, settled in New York City and there in 1857 opened what would become a well-known French-inspired restaurant, Mouquin, on 28th Street and Sixth Avenue, a favorite haunt of artists. The restaurant later became the subject of paintings by William Glackens and Everett Shinn. However, Mouquin closed the doors of his restaurant to protest Prohibition. He died December 24, 1933, at 1:30AM, on his farm near Williamsburg, VA according to his obituary. Prohibition had recently been repealed but too late for this restaurateur who in his time owned three restaurants, celebrated vintage wine and good food, and refused to enter the machine age, never owning an automobile or a telephone.
