Helene Bresslau Schweitzer's Biography
German co-founder of the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, medical missionary, nurse, social worker, linguist, public medicine enthusiast, editor, feminist, sociologist, mother, and wife/confidant of Albert Schweitzer. Albert, a medical missionary, did not mention her role in his efforts. While much of his work seems to overwrite her own, she played a pivotal role in the advancement of medicine, feminine independence, and societal justice.
They married on 18 June 1912 in Gunsbach. Their daughter and only child, Rhena Schweitzer Miller, was born on 14 January 1919 in Strasbourg.
Schweitzer experienced tremendous health issues throughout her life, mostly in relation to the lungs. She first encountered tuberculosis before she turned ten. She was officially diagnosed in the spring of 1922 with laryngeal tuberculosis. In addition the heat of Africa caused many respiratory issues. In 1915, she contracted phlebitis resulting in two weeks of therapeutic bed rest. She also had pneumonia in 1929. Schweitzer died on 1 June 1957, aged 78, in Zurich.
