          Helen Caldicott's Biography

          Australian physician, author, and anti-nuclear advocate who has founded several associations dedicated to opposing the use of nuclear power, depleted uranium munitions, nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons proliferation, war and military action in general. She hosts a weekly radio program, If You Love This Planet.
          Caldicott is a visible advocate for nuclear disarmament and lectures around the world on the subject of world peace. In addition, she has written books and innumerable articles for publication in newspapers and magazines in several countries, developed video tapes and films in an attempt to educate people on the issues.
          In 1971 she became a spokesperson against French nuclear testing in the pacific and worked with Australian trade unions in 1975, educating members about medical dangers of nuclear fuel and uranium mining. As a physician, she founded the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic at the Adelaide Children’s Hospital in 1975.
          Residing in the US from 1977 to 1986, as an instructor in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, specializing in cystic fibrosis, and on the staff of Children’s Hospital in Boston, she mobilized physicians to spread the word about the dangers of nuclear power, weapons and war. She traveled widely and helped start similar organizations in other countries. In 1980 she resigned her medical positions to work full time on the prevention of nuclear war. When she returned to Australia in 1987, she ran for Federal Parliament but was narrowly defeated.
          Winner of several awards, inlcuding a Nobel Peace Prize nomination, she shared with her husband the Peace Medal Award (United Nations Association of Australia), for their work toward world peace. She shared the Integrity Award (John-Roger Foundation), with Bishop Desmond TuTu and won the Ghandi Peace Prize,among many other awards.
          In association with physicians and scientists, Dr. Caldicott and her husband Bill have devoted years to educating the people of New Zealand and Australia about the vast dangers to health of nuclear production and development. She is president of The Nuclear Policy Research Institute based in California.
