Heinrich Mann's Biography
German novelist, essayist and playwright, the older brother of writer Thomas Mann. His novel Professor Unrat was the basis for the 1932 film The Blue Angel starring Marlene Dietrich.
Heinrich grew up in a wealthy merchant family in Lübeck, Germany. His father was a grain merchant and city senator. His mother was a pianist and a planter’s daughter from German-Brazilian parentage. In 1891, his father died and the family grain business was liquidated. When already a successful writer, he encouraged his younger brother to write.
The Nazis burnt Heinrich Mann’s books as “contrary to the German spirit” during the infamous book burning of 10 May 1933, which was instigated by the then Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels. Mann fled to France and lived in Paris and Nice and then in Spain and the USA.
His second wife, Nelly Mann (1898–1944), committed suicide in Los Angeles. Heinrich Mann died on 11 March 1950, sixteen days before his 79th birthday, in Santa Monica, California, lonely and without much money, just months before he was to relocate to East Berlin to become president of the German Academy of Arts.
