          Harrison H. Schmitt's Biography

          American politician, geologist and astronaut, a scientist at NASA 1965-1978 and pilot of the Apollo 17 lunar module, 7 December 1972. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1964 and became project chief of the U.S. Geological Survey. On 26 June 1965, he became one of six civilian-scientist astronauts and went on to train other astronauts in geology. On 11 December 1972 he followed Eugene Cernan to became the 12th man on the Moon.
          Retiring from NASA in 1975, he was elected U.S. Senator, Republican, from New Mexico, on 2 November 1976. He failed to get reelected in 1982. He and his wife Teresa live in New Mexico’s Sandia Mountains, where he runs with his two dogs and brainstorms space projects for foundations and businesses.
