          Hans Wilsdorf's Biography

German entrepreneur who was the founder of Rolex wristwatches. The trade name, Rolex, was registered at Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland on 7/02/1908, 8:00 AM.
After Wilsdorf’s parents died in 1893, his uncle placed him in a boarding home. Exhibiting an interest in foreign countries, he eventually got an apprenticeship in an exporting firm. In 1900, he moved to La Chaux De Fonds and began working for a watch exporting firm. Determined to make his life better, he managed to obtain one pocket watch from each of the three top Swiss watchmakers and then used his inheritance to form his own company, “Wilsdorf & Davis.” By 1908, the firm was one of the leading watch merchants in the United Kingdom. By 1925, he came to the realization that he needed to advertise in order to further expand his sales, and with the birth of the “Rolex Oyster” in 1926, the company’s success was assured.
Wilsdorf died in Geneva on 7/06/1960.
