          Hans Surén's Biography

German military officer, author and champion of naturism (nudism), known for his book, Der Mensch und die Sonne (Man and Sunlight) (1924), which broadly presents his thoughts on sport and naked life in the outdoors. This book was reworked into an international bestseller. In the first two years after publication, 61 editions were published, and by the end of World War II it had sold 250,000 copies. Several editions were translated into English.
The second revision appeared in 1936 under the title Mensch und Sonne – Arisch-olympischer Geist (Man and Sun – Aryan Olympic Spirit) with a strong racist impact and numerous quotes from Hitler’s book Mein Kampf. Jews were demonized and Goebbels, Rosenberg and Hitler were quoted extensively. Adolf Hitler knew about Surén’s book and lauded him and his ideas.
In 1941 Surén was accused of crimes and in 1942 he was excluded from the NSDAP for public masturbation and sentenced to a fine. During the last years of the Nazi regime Surén was detained in the penitentiary at Brandenburg.
He died in Berlin on 17 February 1972, aged 86.
